Abdominoplasty FAQ’s

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct excessive looseness, sagging, protrusion or weakness of abdominal wall. Hence the abdomen becomes tighter and flatter. The abdominal profile becomes smoother and firmer; It becomes more proportional to overall body shape and body weight

The Cosmetic surgeon removes all excessive skin and unwanted fat of the abdomen from umbilicus level and below The deeper MUSCLES that are weakened or separated (due to pregnancy, weight loss or aging) are strengthened by suturing. The umbilicus is repositioned by Umbilicoplasty.
No, Abdominoplasty is not a good method for weight loss. Not only is it less effective for people who are obese, but also the results are less than ideal, and there are increased risks for the significantly overweight person.
Yes, that is one of the main purposes of Abdominoplasty
Apart from the routine tests, an ultrasound scan of the abdomen is done to rule out associated intraabdominal or intrapelvic pathology e.g. uterine mass, which can be tackled during the Abdominoplasty procedure. Other tests are for purpose of giving Anaesthesia. The patient must be of good general health with no life threatening illnesses or medical conditions.

Liposuction can be done in which areas of the body? Can the problems come back after Abdominoplasty?
Fat cannot come back unless one gains weight again, in which case all body areas will share in the weight gain. However, after Abdominoplasty the treated area has a permanently decreased capacity for additional fat, because so many of the fat cells have simply been removed. But there are still fat cells present, so some gain in that area is to be expected with weight gain.

The best candidates for Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) are men or women who are in relatively good physical condition but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal MUSCLES and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. Body contouring procedures such as Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) are not intended as a substitute for losing weight via diet and exercise. Excess abdominal skin and fat can be removed from the middle and lower abdomen following bariatric weight loss surgery.
Following tummy tuck surgery, your Cosmetic surgeon will apply bandages and dressings to your incision and may ask you to wear an elastic garment to help your skin adhere to the underlying tissues. If removable sutures are used, your surgeon will remove them in seven to 10 days. At that time, you should be able to resume many everyday activities, but you will need to avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for at least four to six weeks.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) surgery generally requires 2 to 5 hours to perform.
Generally, a general Anesthetic is used to perform Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) surgery.
There is temporary soreness, swelling, and possibly some bruising. An abdominal binder is worn for several weeks following Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) surgery. Soft drains under the abdominal skin flap are removed in the office approximately one week after surgery. Tiredness may persist for several weeks. Numbness of the skin of the abdomen may last for several months.
